Our Lodge

A home for good men in the heart of Effingham County

Springfield Lodge No. 440, F.&A.M.

Springfield Lodge No. 440 is a constituent lodge of the Free & Accepted Masons of Georgia, working under the authority of the Grand Lodge of Georgia. Our lodge meets in Springfield, the county seat of Effingham County, and welcomes good men from Springfield, Guyton, Rincon, Clyo and the surrounding communities.

Like every regular Masonic lodge, we are a body of Master Masons who gather under a charter to confer the three degrees of Freemasonry, to conduct the business of the lodge, and to enjoy the fellowship of brothers who share a commitment to faith, family, country and community. Our members come from every walk of life: farmers and business owners, teachers and first responders, veterans and young men just starting out. Inside the lodge, all meet upon the level.

What Happens at Our Lodge

The life of the lodge revolves around its stated communications, the regular business meetings held on a fixed schedule set by the lodge's by-laws. At these meetings the brethren read the minutes, vote on petitions, plan charitable work, and welcome visiting brothers from other lodges.

Between stated communications the lodge holds called communications to confer degrees on new candidates. Degree work is the heart of Masonic ritual: the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason degrees teach moral lessons through allegory and the symbolic working tools of the ancient stonemasons.

Masonry is also about fellowship. Meals before meetings, family nights, and community events are a big part of lodge life, and the friendships made around the lodge table often last a lifetime.

Serving Effingham County

Relief, one of the three great tenets of Freemasonry, calls every Mason to help those in need. Lodges across Georgia support local schools and scholarships, assist widows and orphans of the brethren, and back the charitable work of the wider Masonic family, including the Shriners Children's hospitals. Springfield Lodge No. 440 takes pride in standing alongside our neighbors in Effingham County.

Freemasonry in Georgia

Freemasonry arrived in Georgia with the colony itself. Solomon's Lodge in Savannah was organized in 1734 under General James Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony, and is honored as one of the oldest continuously operating Masonic lodges in the Western Hemisphere. The Grand Lodge of Georgia was established in 1786 and today oversees lodges in every corner of the state. When you join Springfield Lodge No. 440, you become part of a Georgia tradition nearly three centuries old.

Visiting Brethren Welcome

Masons in good standing from any lodge recognized by the Grand Lodge of Georgia are always welcome at our communications. Please bring your current dues card and be prepared to be examined, or vouched for by a brother who has sat in lodge with you. We would be honored to have you sit with us.
